I thought at first, “It’s too good to be true. “ But on the other hand, what did I have to lose?
I decided to completely surrender to my recovery and I put all my faith in the fact that it is my body which regulates my weight.
What a feeling it was! That meant I would not be afraid if I felt like eating, but eat. It means I need it.
I have been living with this rollercoaster for so many years. Living with constant fear and guilt. I’ve had enough. Discovering that what matters is simply body-mind balance and trust, was amazing!
There are three main principles I followed to recover
- My body controls my weight and I must surrender.
- I have a restrictive mind and it is more of a matter not to restrict rather than overeating. The second will not happen.
- If I feel like eating I need to eat and not feel bad about it. I need it.
It may sound strange, but let me explain. I was hungry. In periods of extreme hunger, I would eat a lot, followed by starving, purging or exercising only because I wasn’t aware of the science behind the hunger.
The science behind hunger can be compared to a volcanic eruption. The lava burns everything. And the earth heals in time, growing in trees and creating beautiful landscape.
Hunger is a result of starvation. It’s a natural process of refeeding damaged body and mind.
If we surrender to it, calm down, slow down and let the body heal, it will thank us by balancing all the resources. The extreme hunger will diminish, and the mind will stop craving.
If we turn out focus inside us and truly listen to ourselves, we realise that all the necessary knowledge of what we need, is there.
By letting go of false beliefs, we welcome new pathways.
I had so enough of eating disorder horror, that I let it go by implementing all those principles, which allowed me to build a new pathway.
I learned to meditate, to accept myself, to change my focus on what is truly important in life – freedom.
I have built a great relationship with food by eliminating the bad list. “All food is good” was my mantra. Let us break it down into fat, protein, and carbs. What is wrong with a slice of cake? Eggs, sugar, flour, milk, butter, fruits. Which of these ingredients can be called bad? None. All is needed. Now let us look at a piece of baked fish with butter, white or sweet potato, roasted veggies, etc., pasta carbonara, or chips. It’s all good food. We build our meals based on what we like and enjoy.
During recovery, focusing on the principle that food is good and building that balance back is important while building a good regular eating habit. Leaving long periods between meals can cause stress for our bodies. Six meals per day during recovery : 3 mains and three snacks. This way, your body learns that there will be no starvation.
Recovery is tough, but if you make your principles and follow the freedom path, you will soon realise it is all true. Your body regulates your weight. Listen to your body and mind. Build trust and let go. Follow the process of healing. Like the earth after volcanic eruption.
Let yourself heal. Be free.
Love and light
